Job Security?

So what is job security?

When I was a kid my dad used to tell me the following:

"Son, if you are loyal to your boss; loyal to the company you work for; come to work early and leave late (but never leave earlier than your boss), do what is asked to do and no complaints; be honest and don't "擦鞋" 和 "攪是非" then you will have job security.".

My dad applied these principles and worked for the same company for 40 years.

I am amazed that my father had actually accomplished this milestone. However, nowadays I really doubt if these principles could work in today's corporate world, particularly in the private industry/enterprise sectors. I believe today employers' expectations of their employees are:
  1. What have you done for me lately?
  2. What can you bring to the table?
  3. Why should I keep you on payroll?
  4. Be innovative, we don't need a "cow" (meaning you should complete your assignments on time w/o OT);
  5. Can the group/team/company survive without you?
  6. Be an overachiever (accomplish more within your standard work hours)
  7. Proactive rather than reactive
  8. Self-starter with minimum assistance/guidance
  9. Team player

Do all these sound very challenging to you? If not, congratulation; you are a survivor.

i agree, employers are looking for what "contributions" can an employee can bring to the table or to the team. 'loyalty' - partly because the global competitions. big companies are not giving out the same commitments - "pension" to reward someone's loyalty. also, technology changes so often ... that the skill set an engineer has from 1990 could always be classified as "obsolete or legacy". also, the world get more and more complicated; it used to be one country can only produce one high quality product, but with the technology advancement, the same product can be produced at another part of the world - for example " california wine".

Witty, your points are right on the money. I believe in today's world loyalty is getting harder and harder to find in large enterprises. If our boss(es) kept changing every two to three years, then how can we have loyalty? If HR never defined guidelines/policies to reward loyal employees, then loyalty is pretty much non-existence.
