Back from winter vacation

Returned from Toronto late last night and we were tired.

Spent the first three days in Seven Springs, PA, for skiing, then headed to Toronto on Christmas Day until Friday morning. Overall the trip was good except for the weather. It was raining on Sunday the 23rd in PA so we could not ski at all (ended up swimming in the pool and playing bowling). Therefore we officially skied for only 1.5 days, oh well. Then in Toronto it was raining/snowing on both Wednesday and Thursday but weren't that bad so we could still go out shopping and eating. Kids bought a lot of toys and books in Toronto so overall they enjoyed it very much. My wife got a necklace and I got myself a Smart Car :-)

Now we have four days to rest before heading back to work/school.

Hurt my lower back...ouch!

Not sure what I did, but my back has been real sore since Wednesday. I skipped badminton on Friday so I can stay home to rest it. Ski trip is less than a week away and I don't want to disappoint my kids so I will have to take it real easy over the next five days.

Mac Vista!!!

I finally had a chance this evening to work on my new Macbook. I added 4GB of RAM ($80 from Newegg) and a huge 250GB internal hard disk (from Microcenter, $139) so I can multi-boot.

This new Macbook came with the latest Apple Leopard OS X and also included the Boot Camp software to enable you to install Windows XP or Vista on the Mac.

So now I have the best of both world - Mac OS for my photo/video imaging and studying needs, and Windows Vista for legacy Windows programs (man, I have already begun to use the term "legacy" on Microsoft!).

My next adventure is to install Ubuntu on the Mac...stay tuned.

It's about time.....to buy a Mac

It's about time.

These days I clearly don't see an advantage of buying another Windows-based PC. With us doing everything on the web now I can just do the same with a Mac instead of a Windows PC.

Today the Mac is based on Intel-based hardware architecture, which I am very familiar with. However, the Mac OS and graphic are so much better than Windows, especially if you are into photo imaging and video.

And with Google's Docs I can create documents, spreadsheet, and presentation just like Windows.

With that, I am going to get myself a Mac for Christmas.

I think I deserve it.

I like the iMac with a 24" screen, which is perfect for video and imaging (my wife will love it, too). It will instantly make our living room comes to life (I will double it as a lively picture frame to display my family pictures in the living room).

I also like the Macbook's 13" screen, sleek and mean. Since I am getting old and have a bad back, so traveling light is now a requirement.

And Safari has put IE7 to shame.

The last time I used a Mac on a daily basis was back in early 1990's. I have not used it much since then.

I am going to take advantage of our company's discounts to buy ourselves some Macs. I also look at buying a Mac now will enable me to learn more about the latest Mac design and its software applications.

So sorry Mr. Bill Gate, it's time for a change.

Goodbye 65, hello 52!

My 65-inch TV had finally passed away last week. I bought it in March 2001 so it lasted almost 7 years. I fixed the old TV once early this year due to a bad circuit chip which caused the picture to compress. This time it was the power circuit that had gone bad and it wouldn't power up. After doing some search I had determined that it's too costly to repair it so I decided to replace the old TV with a 52-inch flat panel LCD TV from Vizio. I bought the Vizio from Costco for $2199 and its picture quality is clearly on par with other brands that cost two to three times more. Below is the picture of the TV.



This TV has four HDMI inputs with full inband audio decoding, native 1080p at 1920x1080 pixels, and powerful full range detachable speakers. It can decode HDTV signals from my Cox cable so now I don't need my indoor HDTV antenna anymore! The picture is so sharp and vivid that it blows my mind away. I also got myself a Wii component video cable and now my Wii looks 10 times better than before. I actually visited Bestbuy and Circuit City prior to making the purchase and neither store offered anything close to what Vizio/Costco had to offer (both price and features wise). Costco also offers a two-year warranty on the TV which is very good.

I finally watched this movie Friday night. It was very good although the ending could be better.

Both were very good. Highly Recommended.

Next on my list is "C+偵探" - 郭富城/谷祖琳. However, the DVD won't be released until Thanksgivings time frame.

I still need to find time to watch 墨攻 by 劉德華/崔始源, but for some reason I am not too excited about this movie. Oh well, may be this weekend.

Winter Vacation Plan

Vacation Plan for the winter:

Dec 22 - 25: Ski trip vacation in Seven Spring, Pennsylvania.
Dec 25 - 29: Toronto, Canada

Surprisingly and coincidently a co-worker and his family will also be skiing in Seven Spring from Dec 22 - 25. He and I actually paid the same Chinese group for the ski package. I will ask to see if he wants to join us in Toronto...

They were very good movies. Just don't think about the story lines; just relax and enjoy. We sometimes need to fantasize and submerge ourselves in virtual reality. Illusion and pretend to be a hero, a lover, and anything in between. Have a beer after exercise, it's good for you.

And drink a cup of coffee everyday; it's good for your liver, too.

Don't feel sorrow/upset/angry, etc., life is a show, just enjoy it!!!

Lastly, make sure to have a good laugh everyday no matter what happens. Just laugh out loud!

Sleepless in D.C.

Still awake.

It's 3:30 AM Sunday morning. Everyone is asleep except me, why?

No clue.

One of those nights, I guess.

Watching karaoke downstairs (too bad, I can't sing because I will wake up the entire neighborhood with my shivering voice) while writing this blog. Music is my preferred method to keeping me loose.

Was our life much simpler before the Internet? I wonder what I would be doing at this hour if Internet doesn't exist today? Read a book or watch MTV?

I guess I will do the latter.

My wife has been talking to me about visiting Hong Kong in June/July 2008. Will see if it works out. If we do go back it will be eight years since we left HK in June of 2000. Wow, it's been that long!

Business Trips in Coming Weeks

I will be in Utah for two days next week, and then to Orlando for three days the following week. I have never been to Utah before so it should be a good trip. As for Orlando...been there a few times already...hot, humid, crowded, traffic jam, need to say more?

Yes, I am not impressed with Orlando, but very likely I will go there again next June for five days, ouch!

I am traveling next Wednesday the 26th, which is my wife's birthday. I have not figured out what to get her this time...may be just a dinner for two, not sure. Ideas are welcome :-)

Updates...

It's been awhile since I last blog, sorry. I have been super busy...

Anyway my wife got a jellyfish sting on the last day at the beach and it was a painful one. We wiped off the venom stuff with the beach sand and then applied vinegar to soothe the stung areas. She said it felt like there were "thousands of needles pinching her muscle at the same time"...ouch!!!

Hilton Head was fine in my opinion. Was it worth the 10-hour drive from our house? Well, guess not. My family and I didn't think it's worth the 10-hour drive for what it had to offer (and certainly not the jellyfish!!!). Outer Banks, near the border between Virgina and North Carolina, was better and a shorter drive (only 4.5 hours from our house). Very likely we will return to Outer Banks next year but we may give Myrtle Beach a try. My wife will make the call (together with her lady friends); all I do is to pay the bills and drive.

For some reasons I have not been active with my home computers after work. May be I am having burnout...not sure. Kids are back to school, which means the summer has officially come to an end. For the moment my brain is stuck...no good topics to talk about so I apologize if I had bored you :-(

Baby Sharks, Stingrays, and Sunburn

So I have been here at the beach since Saturday, and I have gotten myself some nasty sunburn. This is because I am stubborn and refused to apply sunblock (hate those sticky feeling on my skin). Yes, I do look like a welldone roast ping now, haha.

This morning my wife and I took a walk at the beach before sunrise and saw some people were fishing already in the shallow water. We walked over to them and was surprised to see that they had caught baby sharks and stingrays!! Wow! However, they were not allowed to keep them due to state laws so they would eventually throw them back at sea.

We have scaled back boogieboarding a bit and have been relaxing and throwing football at the beach. We went to boating yesterday and caught stone crabs, shrimps, and fish. However, we were not allowed to keep them so it was just for the fun of it. Schools in South Carolina started this week so there were very few people at the beach; we pretty much have the beach all by ourselves!

Last night we went to the marina bay to watch firework. Nothing spectacular; but the kids loved it.

Last but not least, I have not shaved since last Friday morning, so I had grown some short beard all over my face. My wife said she had never seen me looking like this so she said it's kind of funny looking!?!? Funny looking? I thought I look like the guys on the CBS's Survivors show, wakakaka...

Oh well, back to the hot tub...

So I have been here since Saturday afternoon and temperature has been steaming into the mid 90's and lots of sweat. We spent most of the day at the beach, and in between soaked our tired bodies in our beach house's private swimming pool and hot tub. August is a high season for jellyfish in the South Carolina's beaches. In the past two days since we were here a lot of people had gotten stung by jellyfish and they were in severe pain. The best treatment was to apply cool vinegar to wash the affected area. If you use tap water it would discharge the poisonous venom that was left on the surface of the body or skin. If you are at the beach, use sand to scrap off any cells leftover from the sting.

I have been boogie-boarding a lot these past two days and it was fun. If you don't know what boogie-boarding means, you can check here.

3 more days to go - count down to Hilton Head Island!

My family's summer vacation will begin in 3 days!!!

Hilton Head Island is located in the southernmost tip of South Carolina, about 600 miles from where I live in Washington, D.C. The distance is about the same from my house to Toronto, Canada, therefore I am expecting a 10-hour drive to get there.

Some information about Hilton Head can be found here.

We will stay there for a week, together with two other families whom we have known since our college days. We have rented a single vacation house next to the beach in Hilton Head that has six bedroom suites, two hot tubs, and a private swimming pool in the back yard. I plan to take a lot of videos and pictures this time to include sunrise and sunset shots. We plan to leave Friday around 4 or 5 PM and stay overnight in North Carolina before continuing to Hilton Head Saturday's morning.

What a day I want to forget!

Today wasn't a good Friday to me.

Got conference calls started from 1PM and lasted until almost 5PM (so I missed badminton). During the call I found out that I needed to prepare something over weekend so the information can be released on Monday to the customers (so I don't have a weekend!).

On my way home my wife called and she told me her dad's car alarm went off and couldn't be stopped. I thought it would be a simple fix so I told her don't worry I could fix it in 30 minutes.

Well, it turned out that my in-laws left his headlight on and eventually drained the battery out. The car alarm, for some reason, started to make siren noise when the battery level reached some low level mark. So, I jump-started the car and everything was then a-okay. I even told my in-laws that I would drive his car out for a few miles to charge up the battery and then come home. Oh well, that turned out to be a mistake.

The car drove fine for about two miles and I decided to get myself a nice cold Mocha coffee from Burger King (don't ask me why I went there) before heading home. Because I didn't want to stop the engine so I decided to hit the Drive Thru lane instead to place my order. After I placed my order I queued up behind the cars and waiting for my turn to pay the bill. I inched forward slowly and then all of the sudden the engine just died. That's right, it just died. I tried to re-start the engine but the alarm went off!! I said - WTF!!! Remember, I was in the Drive Thru Lane at Burger King so drivers behind me started to yell "What's going on?!" I told them "Sorry, my car just died, can't move. I need someone to push my car out of the Drive Thru Lane". They then said "Sorry, can't help you here". Man, can't you guys lend a helping hand! I meant, they were young to middle-age males, not ladies! One guy even said "there is a Tire Plus across the street from the King". I told them - "I know, but they are closed!" Then I thought - "man, if I were a lady I bet you all would start rolling up your sleeves and start pushing my in-laws car!" Luckily the workers inside Burger King came out and helped push my in-laws car to the parking lot to clear up the jam. I gave two guys $10 each and thanked them for their help. I also paid them the money to cover the Mocha coffee.

Okay, now what. The car couldn't start and the alarm went off whenever I tried to start the engine. I called my wife and told her the bad news and needed her to come to BK with my tools box so I can disconnect the battery cable and stopped the alarm. She then said "You idiot!!!" She came about 20 minutes later and I finally removed the cable and stopped the alarms. I then took out the battery and headed to K-Mart to buy the new battery. I was lucky because K-Mart closed at 10PM and I got there around 9:30 PM. I then returned to the parking lot and replaced the dead battery and everything was then "A_OKAY". By the time I got home it was almost 11PM and all sweat!!!

Finally I then realized that I had forgotten to pick up my ice-cold Mocha from Burger King!!!

HK Style Set Meals in L.A.

Yummy Yummy! That's my comments for the HK foods in L.A.

L.A. has become more HK-like with numerous restaurants and tea shops targeting the younger generations. Here are pictures as taken from a few HK-style restaurants that served "HK-style" set meals (came with a drink and a soup).

In Anaheim This Week...

Sorry that I have not blogged since early July because I have been super busy at work. Multiple projects going on at the same time and I barely had the time to sleep!

I am in Anaheim, CA, this week attending a vendor's conference. I can't really say I am enjoying it because officially I am still working this week so I need to answer calls and e-mails as they come in.

Working in the IT industry requires a lot of dedication and energy as new stuff coming out more often these days and we have less and less time to master it. I should not have said the words "master it" because we just simply don't have enough time to fully master the technologies.

Los Angeles is a unique city. Its diversity is amazing and you would be amazed how different cultures can co-exist together. Not always perfect though but it's a work in progress. The poors, the riches, and the in-between somehow find their ways to live together in this densely populated city of the west. The city itself is full of energy; very comparable to Hong Kong. As a matter of fact being in L.A. actually makes me feeling younger because people are always actively doing something (having fun, on the go, etc) so if I don't follow their routines I kind of feel like I am falling behind.

Did I mention food? The Chinese foods are awesome here. Prices are cheap (as compared to the East coast) and very delicious. I will take some pictures at the dinner table next time (sorry, I forgot to bring my DSLR so I will have to use my Q).

Lucky Triple Seven?

Well, today is 7.7.07 and is viewed as a lucky day.



Hundreds of couples are getting married in the USA today but I am not sure if it's also happening across the globe (well, I am pretty certain that it is not happening in Hong Kong or China because we know what "7" means to us).

Anyway, so why "7" is lucky? I digged up some little facts from Google about "7"...

• The reason for 7 being a lucky number symbolically (such as in the Bible) is because it represents the union of man and woman, since the number for women is 4 and the number for men is 3.

• Seven Lucky Gods exist in Japanese mythology.

• Being dealt three 7 cards in Blackjack is almost a sure win, as they would add up to 21. Seven is considered a lucky number in Western culture.

As for my lucky "7" event? Well, it happened only once and it was back in 1986 when I was playing a slot machine in a Macau's casino. I wasn't and am not a big fan of gambling; however on that day (in 1986) I happened to be just "old" enough to enter the casino and the next thing I knew I hit three seven's on a slot machine. I think I won like a $1000 buck but it was fun.

Pisces!!!

While cleaning up my old boxes of stuff that I kept from my college days I was surprised to find something I had kept (unintentionally) for 20 years.

Here is the picture of it. Anyone remember it?



It was the compressedly-packed towel from 大家樂!

If I remembered correctly this "towel" was given to the customers who ate at the 大家樂 back in the summer of 1987. I asked for Pisces because that was my sign. I also got one for my ex-girlfriend back then and we pledged to keep them unopened for as long as they lasted (however, our relationship ended in 1988, oh well...). For some reasons I still kept it, but honestly I had forgotten all about it until today.

I plan to keep it forever and will take good care of it. Someday I will show it to my grand children and tell them my puppy love story, hahaha :-)

Remembering 黃家駒 - Beyond

One of my favorite singers and excellent music 創作人; 作曲, 作詞及主音. It's sad that he left us at such a young age (31) on June 30th, 1993.

His songs were very influential to the young generations in his era. His style was certainly unique and unlike other HK singers at that time. His songs didn't have that "factory or corporate" like feeling, which was good in my opinion. In addition, for him and his band to perform in Japan certainly wasn't an easy task as well. It was his love and dedication to music that pushed him to go beyond others.

My friends, let's remember 黃家駒的《光輝歲月》.

Although this song was written in the mid 70's but it applied to the families who immigrated from HK to other countries in the 80's during the big immigration rush. The situation got worse when the husbands had to move back to Hong Kong to work and leaving the wives and children behind in the foreign lands. No matter what the reasonings were back then it was a big challenge to the mothers that were left behind to deal with the situations.

However, my thought of this song actually fits the 10th year anniversary of HK Returning to China. If you look back the past 10 years we have gone through a lot of joys and tears, angers and hopes (or hopelessness).
