How does a friendship get started?

After reading the posts from Jasper (Always a Reason Behind) and WittyBB (A Reason), I have this question on my mind.

How does a friendship get started?

We are all nobody to anybody. That is, I don't know you and you don't know me. So, how did we become friends? It's not just one's intention and willingness to make friend to anybody. It's a two-way street, don't you think?

For example, I wish to be friend with David, but he can choose to say "No". Similarly, WittyBB can say the same thing - No. So...what bring us together? Is it because we have the same interest? Or because we like to "blog"? Or because we are from Hong Kong? Or because we happened to be working in the same company?

I think WittyBB said it best, "這個地球有數十億人,能夠跟你碰上的是一種緣份, 能夠成為朋友是難能可貴."

Danny and Leslie - my idols when I was growing up as a kid/teenager. Anyway, putting both Danny and Leslie in the same sentence is very rare, let alone having them together on the same stage singing each other's popular songs!

Remembering 張國榮

Leslie Cheung left us on April 1st, 2003. I will dedicate this week's songs to pay tribute to one of the most influential figures of our generation. I first listened to Leslie in 1977 when I was a 11-year-old in Hong Kong. The names of the songs were called 'Do You Wanna Make Love' and 'I Like Dreamin'.

I will begin this week's song with a bang!

Garden Work Day

Today is Sunday and the weather was perfect (warm and around 70's F). My wife and I woke up very early so we can go shopping (not Wii shopping this time, hehe) for the garden stuff. We went to Lowes for Red Wood mulches, fertilizers for grass and plants, top soils, and weed control substances. We then spent the whole morning applying the mulches, fertilizing the lawns and plants, and spraying weed controls substance on our whole front and back yards. We normally do this around mid to late March every year because timing is very critical or our front and back yards will look bad for the whole spring and summer. Hey, we do want our lawns look "greener" than our neighbors :-)

Next project is to buy some small white stones for landscaping, and trim some trees around our house.

Consistently Right / Consistently Wrong

I learned this from my manager back in Hong Kong. She taught me one thing - at work, you have to be either consistently right or consistently wrong on certain topics/subjects. The reason behind her logic was because this is how you establish yourself in the politics-heavy work environment. She didn't mean you need to make constant mistakes, and this certainly won't work in a technology world. What she meant was that there will be times when it involved process, procedure, or a piece of design, the meaning of what is "right" or "wrong" can vary from person to person's view. The key is to stick with it and constantly backing it up even though it may not be "right". She equated this thought to being a lawyer. Does lawyer always say the "right" things? Well, to you or someone else it may not seem right, but to the lawyer's clients it's "right". She said the key is to not show the weak side of yourself, or being inconsistent in your thinking process. If you are being challenged by your colleagues, don't show the weak side and back down even if you knew it's not right.

Believe me, today I am still debating within myself whether her logic is always correct. However, I do believe sometimes it does make sense. Technology is one thing, but sometimes it's the process and procedure that made people think it's wrong and you have to back it up to defend it.

Wouldn't our life be so simple if 1 + 1 is always = to 2?

It's Tax Time In America!

Well, it's less than 30 days away and I haven't even started yet. I have been doing my own taxes since my first job (1985) in college and nowadays there are tax programs which greatly reduce the chance of making errors. However, this year's filing will be a bit complicated for me because I worked part year last year in Los Angeles so the State taxes will be a bit complex. When I was in Hong Kong the taxes were so simple. That's why in America there are experts in everything - they make a fortune off your hard-earned salary because life isn't so simple after all :-(

Case in point - an electrician charges US$150 per hour to install a ceiling fan in the house, extra if you have a high ceiling (higher than 10 feet). That's just labor - you will have to buy your own fan. My house has a 19-foot high ceiling and the guy told me it would be $300 for the whole install! Wow! I bought the fan for only $80 and this guy wanted $300 to install! I ended up renting an 18-foot high ladder from a hardware store for $40 a day and installed the fan myself. I have been trying to avoid costly repairs by fixing things myself but there were times where I had no choice but to turn to the experts for help (lack of tools/knowledge/heavy machinery).

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

Today is my birthday and I am glad that I was able to enjoy it with my friends and family.

David was very nice. He knew that I just got the Wii console so he made me a "Wiimote" birthday cake! Very thoughtful of you David, and I thank you very much. Here is a picture of the "Wiimote" cake that David made so I can keep a record of it. Thanks again, David! It looks very real, doesn't it? My kids love it!



I was planning to have my birthday lunch treat with WittyBB and David this afternoon but unfortunately due to last minute issues at work David was unable to make it. However, we will go at another time. WittyBB also gave me a very generous gift so thanks, WittyBB! :-)

In the evening my wife and kids bought this birthday cake from MoMo, a Korean Bakery Shop in Fairfax. It was freshly made so you can actually smell it. Here are the pictures of it.





As for the taste of both cakes...Yummy, Yummy, and Yummy!!! Need to say more?

Temper and Emotion Control

For some reasons, these past few months I found myself getting upset or emotionally high at work (and outside of it) very easily. Not sure why...may be the stuff at work has finally gotten the best of me? Or is it a beginning sign of the mid-life crisis?

April's Cruise Days

On April 1st my family and I will go on a cruise trip for 7 days in the Western Caribbean Islands. I had purchased enough gears for snokering and underwater photography and video. I also purchased a super-wide angle lens to capture dramatic images from and on the ship, as well as on the islands, too. The bad thing (and timing) is that right after the cruise trip I will hop onto a flight the very next day for a 5-day business trip in Kansas City to support a customer demo. I already foresee that I will be very tired at the end of the business trip :-(

Little Home Improvement

Spent the day replacing an old lamp in the breakfast area of my house. Here is the old lamp picture.



The new lamp (or chandelier) was purchased from Costco. Here is the picture after I installed it.



It's not something really fancy, but I think it looks better than the old lamp. The whole job took me about 40 minutes because I had to cut the chain shorter.

Family Health Update

My family is recovering from strep throats and flu. The antibotics work its magic :-)

I had to change my kids' toothbrushes two times every 24 hours for two days just to be safe.

This morning I took my family to visit the doctors and my kids were diagnosed with strep throats and my wife had a flu. Oh boy, what a day!!! I was surprised the doctor's office was full of people waiting, and the whole thing took about three hours! Very exhausting...

Oh well, I am the last guy standing in the house now, and who know I may soon catch one of these nasty stuff!

Good Luck, My Peer!

Today my company executed the involuntary portion of the staff reduction process and one of my peers that I had known since the year 2000 was let go. Deep inside I knew he was smart and capable, but he lacked the EQ and responsiveness to satisfy the key people in the company in order to save his job. On the hand he is a very responsible father and take care of his three children. Losing this job will definitely hurt him, and I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavor.

Talk about surviving in tough times, workplace politics can be very complicated. Even if your manager wanted to save your job, he/she may actually lack the authority to do it if his/her employees didn't satisfy other co-workers/peers/management on the job. Gossips and words of mouth can be very damaging to one's credibility, therefore sometimes it is necessary to satisfy your peers and co-workers as well.

Secondhand Smoke

I am getting frustrated that my co-workers are smoking right next to the company's door entrance. Everyday when I go through that door I inhale some unknown amount of smoke, which is bothering me. I am not talking about one or two persons here, but rather six to 10 people at times!!! Research had shown that secondhand smoke was actually more harmful to our health than the firsthand smoke!!! May be I am getting older now but I do worry about my health.

Can we do something about it? Wearing a mask?

Beer, Beer, and Beer!

My co-worker is leaving us so we threw him a farewell party at a local bar. I haven't drunk a beer since last summer so today I had three big glasses (each glass is about the size of a 7-Eleven's Big Gulp). Boy it was good, and I needed that. It has been a busy week. Friday evening at the bar and playing pool - what a good time to relax! No I am not promoting alcohol here, but occassionally a glass of wine or beer will help relieve the stress in your mind and body.

As for my co-worker, I am sure we will cross path in the future.

Do You Trust Your Peers At Work?

Do you see your peers at work as friends, enemies, or don't care?

In other words, if your peers seem to be "friendly" to you, often helpful, do you know if he/she is "stabbing your back"?

My friends, I don't have answers to these questions. Honestly, I do what is right, and straight from my heart. If someone is "stabbing my back", so be it and I will let the truth (and facts) be my lawyer to fight for me.

However, I do have two advices: be honest, and keep your e-mail. Something you wrote and saved four years ago could end up saving your job. I was called to attend a meeting to explain why we did not implement a redundant design for this critical customer. The account team said I didn't mention it as necessary. What a BS. I pulled out two e-mails I sent to the account team four years ago highlighting the requirements and justifications to install the redundant components for this customer. My manager was also cc'ed in the original e-mails. It turned out that the account team never relayed my messages to my customer because of the fears of additional money will be required to enhance the network which may upset the customer. Go figure. One day there was a cut in the fiber at the customer headquarters and without the redundancy in place the customer was down for a few days. The total business losses had exceeded the total cost of the redundant components by tens of thousands.
